Characteristic Dorsal rays XIII, 12-15; Anal rays II, 12-15; pectoral rays 16-18; lateral-line scales 15-18; Gill rakers 17-19; body depth 2.4-2.7 in standard length. Body moderate to slender. Posterior margin of preopercle smooth. Scales on infraorbitals. Body and fins orange to pale yellow, head pale blue; silvery iris; a small black spot on opercle at upper end of gill opening. Juveniles bright pink.
habitats Found in coastal to outer reef crests to depths of about 20 m. Occurs solitarily or in groups in reef margins and upper seaward slopes subject to mild surge. Feeds mainly on algae. 
Distribution Widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific, including eastern Indian Ocean (Scott and Ashmore Reefs), Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, Philippines, Palau, Indonesia, New Guinea, New Britain, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, and the Great Barrier Reef. It
