Characteristic Dorsal rays XIII, 14-15; Anal rays II, 15-17; pectoral rays 15-17; lateral-line scales 15-16; Gill rakers 20-22; body depth 2.2-2.5 in standard length. Body moderate to slender. Posterior margin of preopercle smooth. Scales on infraorbitals. Body blue, dorsal area from snout to middle of body yellow; black spot near upper origin of pectoral fin; no black spot above opercle.
habitats Inhabits rocky outcrops and crevices that are frequently situated in sand channels on outer reef slopes. Common in deeper sections of the outer reef about 20 to 60 m in depth. 
Distribution Anti-equatorial, from New Caledonia to Queensland and from Taiwan to the Ryukyu Islands; reported from the Loyalty islands. It is found in southern and northern Taiwanese waters.
