Characteristic Dorsal rays XIII, 13-14; Anal rays II, 13-14; pectoral rays 17-18; lateral-line scales 16-17; body depth 2.0-2.1 in standard length. Upper and lower accessory caudal rays not spinous. Posterior margin of preopercle serrated. Both jaws with biserial teeth. Predorsal scales reaching above anterior part of orbit. Body dark with white barring.
habitats Inhabits silty lagoon and coastal reefs around coral outcrops and seagrass beds. Often adjacent to clear mangrove coasts among rubble and Sargassum algae, to a few meters depth. 
Distribution Distributed in the western Pacific, including Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan and northern Australia. It is very rare and only found in southern Taiwanese waters. 
Utility No commercial value.
