Characteristic Dorsal rays XIII, 14-15; Anal rays II, 14-15; pectoral rays 17-18; lateral-line scales 17-18; body depth 1.8-2.0 in standard length. Upper and lower accessory caudal rays not spinous. Posterior margin of preopercle serrated; vertral margin of infraorbital finely serrated. Both jaws with biserial teeth. Predorsal scales reaching above anterior nostril; no scales on infraorbitals. Upper and lower lobes of caudal fin without filamentous posterior rays. A dull greenish black species with a small black saddle-spot on the caudal peduncle, edged with blue. Juveniles with a blue-edged ocelli near the end of the dorsal fin.
habitats A shallow water species, solitary, in holes of small rocks on sandy bottom with coral rubbles. Inhabits shallow bays, silty coastal reefs and harbors with sparse coral and algal growth. Feeds mainly on benthic algae. 
Distribution Distributed in the Indo-West Pacific from Sri Lanka, Andaman Sea (Phuket), and Indo-Australian Archipelago eastward to New Britain, Solomon Islands, Santa Cruz Islands, and Vanuatu, north to Japan. It is a common species in Taiwan except western part.
