Characteristic Dorsal rays XIII, 14-16; Anal rays II, 12-14; pectoral rays 19-20; lateral-line scales 19-21; body depth 1.7-2.1 times in standard length. Upper and lower accessory caudal rays not spinous. Posterior margin of preopercle well serrated, subopercle smooth. Both jaws with uniserial teeth. Upper and lower lobes of caudal fin without filamentous posterior rays. Body generally brown to nearly black; paler ventrally; lips dusky brown; margin of scales on sides with blackish streak, appearing as series of transverse bands; few small blue spots scattered on head and sides. Finsdark brown grading to smoky gray distally; pelvic and anal fins bright blue anteriorly.
habitats Occurs close to shore in rocky or dead reef areas where visibility is often reduced due to silting and wave action. Territorial, maintains and 'weeds' filamentous algae patches growing on dead coral.
