Characteristic Dorsal fin with VII spines & 12-13 soft rays; anal fin with II spines & 8 soft rays; pelvic fin rounded; lateral scales series 88-100. Postlarvae with large white spots, the spots remaining part of the adult pattern, but become obscured with additional small white spots in the grey areas. Adout yellowish brown with black saddle on the caudal peduncle, juvenile purplish brown.
habitats Sporadic distribution and habitat specific, preferring large coral heads on slopes prone to moderate currents. Adults usually in 20 m depth; juveniles in shallow lagoons or protected bays. Feed on fish. 
Distribution Indo-Pacific: Comoros to the Line, Marquesan and Society islands, north to southern Japan, south to New Caledonia; Guam and Kwajalein in Marshall Islands. Recently found in southern Natal, South Africa. 
Utility Rare species, not commercial species.
