Characteristic Dorsal rays X, 15-17, the 5th to 10th longest and the same length; anal rays III, 7-8; pelvic fin abdomen; pectoral rays 15-17; caudal fin emarginate. Lateral line scales 45-49. Body reddish purple, female with a yellow band to upper caudal fin; male without this yellow band.
habitats Found primarily on continental reefs. Form aggregations on outer reef slopes to depths over 30 m. Feeds on planktonic crustaceans and fish eggs. 
Distribution Indo-West Pacific: Mauritius to the Philippines and Bali to the Solomon Islands, south to Rowley Shoals and the Great Barrier Reef; Palau in Micronesia. Reported from southern Japan. 
Utility Small perchlet, not commercial food species, common aquarium species.
