Characteristic Dorsal-fin rays 115-120; anal-fin rays 79-85; pectoral-fin rays 13-15. Body flexible. Mouth extremely large, maxillary not projecting beyond tip of snout. No canine tooth. Tip of lower jaw slightly beyond the upper; upper jaw shorter than head length.
habitats Inhabits the deeper continental shelf to depths of almost 1,000 m. Found on sand, mud and clay bottoms. Feeds on larger benthic animals. 
Distribution Eastern Atlantic: Gulf of Guinea round the Cape to Natal, South Africa. Western Atlantic: Florida, USA and northern Gulf of Mexico to Brazil. Indo-Pacific: off the eastern coast of Africa and off India and Sri Lanka to Japan. Taiwan: South, North-East.
