Characteristic Dorsal-fin rays 104-117; anal-fin rays 87-95; pectoral-fin rays 13. Caudal fin darkened on middle rays. Related to P. coarctatus, but differs from it in having a small number of scales on the lateral line, larger eye, its diameter 3.5 times in head length, no dark blotches on lateral line and no dots along upper margin of upper eye.
habitats Inhabits sand and mud bottoms near shelf, also found on deep sea area. Feeds on fishes, shrimps, and other small benthic animals. 
Distribution Indo-West Pacific: southern Japan, southern Indonesia to northwest Australia, and New Caledonia. Taiwan: North-East.
