Characteristic Dorsal-fin rays 62-70; anal-fin rays 47-56; pectoral-fin rays 5. Body depth 2.4 to 3.1 times in standard length. Body mottled brown with irregular dark and pale markings; 2-3 dark-edged ocelli along lateral line pectorals blackish distally; dorsal and anal fins with minute black dots; caudal fin with black spots. Gill rakers rudimentary. Scales in lateral lines 71-76.
habitats Inhabits coral heads of lagoon and seaward reefs; common in shallow caves or under ledges and can lie flat against vertical rock surfaces. Feeds on small benthic animals. 
Distribution Indo-Pacific: East Africa to the Society and the Hawaiian islands. Taiwan: South, Hsaioliuchiu. 
Utility Uncommon species, almost not marked.
