Characteristic Dorsal fin with X-XI spines and 1 soft ray; anal fin with 14 soft rays; pectoral fin with 17 soft rays; lateral line scales 55. Body rather slender, flattish on ventral surface. Head depressed with spines and bony ridges. Jaws subequal. Maxillary extends below anterior border of pupil. Anterior several scales in the lateral line with a strong spine. Infraorbital bones forming a strong ridge, confluent with uppermost preopercular spine and having 4-6 spines. Ratio of pectoral-fin length to caudal fin length 0.88 to 1.05.
habitats Inhabit sand or sandy mud bottoms. Found in the continental shelf; depth range 80 - 230 m. 
Distribution Indo-West Pacific: southern Japan, Taiwan and East China Sea. Specimens recorded from Indonesia, the Arafura Sea and northwestern Australia are probably new species. 
Utility Not commercial food species.
