Characteristic Dorsal fin with XIII spines and 8-9 soft rays; anal fin with III spines and 5 soft rays; pectoral fin with 17-18 soft rays; lateral line 24-26; gill rakers 13-16. Resembles species of Pterois in general appearance, but distinguishable from them by the branched upper rays of pectoral fin, and the lower jaw without serrated ridges and scales. Free lachrymal margin provided with short flap less than 2 times eye diameter. Supraorbital flap small or lacking. Anal fin with 3 spines. Caudal fin rounded.
habitats Attains about 15 cm SL. Found on the sublittoral zone Lives on sandy mud or gravel bottom. Sometimes taken by trawl net. 
Distribution Northwest Pacific: southern Japan and Taiwan. Reported from Malaysia 
Utility Not commercial fishery species.
