Characteristic Dorsal fin with XVI-XVIII(XVII) spines and 5-8(7) soft rays; anal fin with II spines and 8-10(10) soft rays; gill rakers 2-4+7-9=10-12. Body with dark brown to reddish purple, variable. Each fin with white spot or line. Inside of pectoral fin with brown spot or line, some with black spot or blotch.
habitats Inhabits demersal marine environment; depth range 10 - 200 m. Food fish. Commercially cultured in Japan. Used as Chinese medicine. 
Distribution Indo-West Pacific: Japan, Taiwan and East China Sea. 
Utility Not commercial food species, edible but careful with it's venomous; also commercial aquarium species.
