Characteristic Dorsal fin with IX-XI spines and 9-11 soft rays; anal fin with II spines and 8-9 soft rays; pectoral fin with 12 soft rays; gill rakers 3-4+10-14=14-17. First dorsal spine longer than second, dorsal spines weak and hairy; caudal fin with 3-4 vertical small spots. Without bladder. Dorsal side with brown or gray stripe, abdomen white without stripe.
habitats Found in sheltered bays, shallow inshore and probably ranging to deep offshore in mud-sand habitats. Buries itself during the day in the substrate and is rarely observed, except when found by accident or at night. Usually covered with hydroids. 
Distribution Western Pacific: southern Japan south to Hong Kong, the Philippines and New Caledonia. 
Utility Not commercial food species.
