Characteristic Dorsal fin with VIII spines and 12 soft rays; anal fin with 11-12 soft rays; pectoral fin with 17 soft rays; lateral line scales 59-62; gill rakers 3 + 16; vertebrae 10+17. Rostral projection very long, tubular and flattish, and slightly directed outward. Breast and nape without scales. Preserved specimens with 3 dark bands on pectoral fin. No spots on dorsum.
habitats Inhabit demersal marine environment. depth range -500m, rare deep-water species. 
Distribution Indo-Pacific: Japan southward, Taiwan to the Philippines, also in western and eastern Australia and around Madagascar, Mozambique Channel and Andaman Sea. 
Utility Not commercial food species, edible.
