Characteristic Dorsal fin with X-XIII spines and 26-29 soft rays; anal fin with II spines and 25-28 soft rays; pectoral fin 13-15; pelvic fin with I spine and 3 soft rays. Closely resembles the "cleaner wrasse" Labroides dimidiatus, in color pattern and general body shape. Mouth of this species is not terminal, as in L. dimidiatus, but ventral in position.
habitats Inhabits reef-associated marine environment. Both fishes are known as famous examples of minicry. Anterior dorsal rays elongated in pre-juveniles. Attains to 10.0 cm TL. 
Distribution Western Indian Ocean: Red Sea south to Durban Bay, South Africa. Replaced by Aspidontus taeniatus taeniatus on the west coast of Australia.
