Characteristic Body oval, deep, strongly compressed. Head length about equal to head height; preopercle smooth, without prominent spines. Snout short. Small protractile mouth with brush-like teeth in the jaws. Dorsal fin with XIII to XIV spines, no notch between spinous and soft dorsal fin; and 16 to 18 soft rays; anal fin with III spines and 14 to 16 soft rays; pectoral fins transparent with 15 soft rays; pelvic fins with I stout spine and 5 branched rays; caudal fin rounded. Body is yellow with narrow dark stripes on the sides; an elongate blue blotch on the upper sides and a white-edged black spot on the caudal peduncle; a blue-edged black bar runs vertically on the head across the eye.
habitats Feed mainly on polyps of Acropora corals in lagoons and outer reefs at depths of 3 to 20 m. Usually in pairs. Oviparous. 
Distribution Distributed from the Andaman Sea eastward throughout the Indo-Malayan Archipelago to Fiji, northward to southern Japan, southward to Lord Howe Island. Widely around coral reefs in Taiwan. 
Utility Marine aquarium fish.
