Body oblong and moderately compressed. A single flat spine on opercle; margin of preopercle smooth. Mouth small, terminal to slightly inferior, the adults with thick lips. Teeth small, villiform, in bands anteriorly in jaws, none on vomer or palatines. A continuous dorsal fin with XVII spines and 26-28 soft rays; anal fin with III spines and 9 soft rays; caudal fin forked; lower 5 pectoral-fin rays unbranched. Scales cycloid and small, 57 in lateral line. Body pale greyish-brown with 8 dark brown oblique bands on head and body, the first through eye not reached pectoral-fin base. Upper lobe of caudal white, lower lobe black.

Found on rocky reefs of shallow waters.
Distribution
Distributed in the northwest Pacific from Japan to Taiwan. It is mainly found in northeastern and northern Taiwanese waters.
