Characteristic Dorsal rays XIII, 11-12; Anal rays II, 11-12; pectoral rays 17; lateral-line scales 17-18; body depth 2.2-2.6 in standard length. Upper and lower accessory caudal rays not spinous. Posterior margin of preopercle serrated. Both jaws with biserial teeth. Predorsal scales reaching above anterior nostril. Upper and lower lobes of caudal fin with filamentous posterior rays. Body brown with large black spot on upper edge of opercle near orgin of lateral line and small one on upper part of pectoral-fin base; posterior part of dorsal and anal fins pale white to yellow, more intense at base of last dorsal rays; base of caudal fin dark brown, extending to outer margins of upper and lower lobes, middle of caudal fin pale white to yellow.
habitats Inhabits inshore and offshore coral reefs; also in harbors and protected outer reef slopes and current prone habitats. Form schools in harbors in depths from near surface to about 25 m. 
Distribution Distributed in the Indo-West Pacific from Red Sea and East Africa to northern Australia and Melanesia (except Fiji), north to southern Japan, Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, and Philippines. It is found in southern, southwestern and northern Taiwanese waters; and 
Utility No commercial value.
