Characteristic Dorsal-fin rays VI-I, 9; anal-fin rays II, 17; pectoral-fin rays 1+11+1. Large dark spot on the upper corner of the operculum is distinctive. A marginally smaller one on caudal base is present. However, the latter can be turned on or off at will. Usually a broad angular band below the eye.
habitats Occurs in inshore reefs of bays or lagoons, typically hovering in small groups in the recesses of caves. Feeds on zooplankton and other small benthic invertebrates. 
Distribution Western Pacific: Sumatra to Samoa, north to the Ryukyu Islands; Palau and Mariana Islands in Micronesia.
