Characteristic Dorsal rays XIII, 12-14; Anal rays II, 13-14; pectoral rays 17-18; lateral-line scales 16-19; Gill rakers 23-25; body depth 2.2-2.5 in standard length. Body moderate to slender. Posterior margin of preopercle smooth. No scales on infraorbitals; cheek with 3 rows of scales. Body brown with white band on middle of side in young, reduces to a small white saddle in large adults. Juveniles with large ocellus that reduces with size and lacks completely in adults and a small white-edged black spot at the posterior base of the dorsal fin.
habitats Occurs in protected inner reef flats and shallow lagoons and channels, over rubble and rocky outcrops, at depth of 0 to 5m. Feeds primarily on filamentous algae. 
Distribution Widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific from East Africa to Samoa, Marshall and Gilbert Islands; Australia northwards to the Ryukyu Islands. It is a very common species in Taiwan except weastern part. 
Utility No commercial value.
