Characteristic Dorsal-fin rays VI-I, 9; anal-fin rays II, 8; pectoral-fin rays 14. Color in formalin light brown; head light tan, with a dark blotch behind opercular flap below the lateral stripe from lower edge of the blotch, terminating as a black dot exactly on the lateral line scales at caudal base. First dorsal fin with a black blotch on upper third of membrane between second and fourth spines; prectoral and pelvic fins transparent; each of anal and second dorsal fins with a subbasal dusky bar in parallel with their bases.
habitats Common in freshwater and estuaries, shallow sheltered inshore reefs or river mouths, among clumps of algae or algal covered rubble. Found in aggregations. Feeds on polychaetes and other small benthic invertebrates. 
Distribution Indo-West Pacific: East Africa to Samoa, north to Taiwan; Mariana and Caroline islands in Micronesia. Reported from Lord Howe Island.
