Characteristic Dorsal-fin rays VII+I, 9; anal-fin rays II, 8; pectoral-fin rays 14. Body reddish brown with about 10 dark bars; no large canine-like teeth on either jaw; palatine without teeth; black ocellus on upper part of opercle; lateral line incomplete, reach only 2nd dorsal fin; fins marbled red; caudal fin rounded.
habitats Nocturnal species. Occurs inshore over rocky bottoms. Also found in outer reefs in mixed rich coral and algae rubble slopes. Feeds on zooplankton and other small benthic invertebrates. 
Distribution Indo-Pacific: Red Sea to the Line, Marquesan, and Society islands, north to the Ryukyu Islands, south to the southern Great Barrier Reef; throughout Micronesia.
